Jason Benedict from Alliance Beverage is going to do the presentation this Friday, March 2nd. We’re doing a little bit of a Round the World with wines from Germany and Australia. We’ll have a great Riesling, a Grenache, a Tempranillo, a Shiraz and a Cab from Hill of Gold and finish with Muscat that is out of this world. No reservations required.

The wine class with Clay Fritz of Fritz Winery was a blast. Thanks to everyone that came by and tried some really nice wines. And my apologies for starting late.

The wine class with Clay Fritz of Fritz Winery on February 23rd is sold out. We will be back to a regular schedule on the following Friday and reservations will not be required.

Callaghan Winery is having a Spring Retrospective Tasting each Friday, Saturday and Sunday from March 2nd thru April 1st. Each weekend they will pour library wines along with their current releases. The library wines include Syrahs, Mourvedres, Petite Sirahs and blends mostly from 2001 thru 2003.

At long last we’ve made a plan for another wine trip. In the middle of August we are going to do a four day trip to Paso Robles. I’ve talked with Norman, Peachy Canyon, Robert Hall and Tobin James for starters. The plan will be to fly out on a Friday morning, visit 8 or 10 wineries (or more) and come back on Monday. Norman Winery has committed to a lunch. No idea on the price but it will include airfare, the bus, the hotel and the VIP winery tours. Let me know if you are interested. We will work on the exact dates and the cost.

On Friday, February 23rd we’re going to have the owner of Fritz Winery, Clay Fritz, in the shop to show us his wines. They have a nice selection of some excellent wines that we will be picking during the next week. Since I’m sure this is going to be popular event we’ll need to do the reserve your spot with a credit card thing. Liza wants me to point out that you are reserving a “spot”, not a “seat”. Please do not send your credit card info to this email address but call us with your number, expiration date, etc. Remember that we are closed on Mondays. There will be no wine class on the 16th because of a calendar conflict.

It looked like a lot of you didn’t read your email to see that I was doing the presentation last week. But thanks for coming anyway. And thanks for the positive responses to the wines.

We have the 2004 Blackwell Shiraz in stock. This is the wine that we tasted when Stuart Blackwell was in town but didn’t have any for sale.

Stuart Blackwell from St Hallet Winery in Australia was the most pleasant of guests. He clearly has the Australian sense of humor and makes some pretty damn nice wines. Thanks to him and to all of you that attended his presentation on Friday.

On February 9th I’m going to do the presentation. We have picked out a mix of wines from Arizona, Washington, Oregon, California and Italy that include a Pinot Gris from King’s Estate, a Chardonnay and a Merlot from Painted Horse, a Pinot Noir from Martin Ray, a blend from J Bookwalter and an Amarone. I don’t believe we’ve ever had any of these wines at a class before. There will be no wine class on the 16th because of a calendar conflict.

We have had a nice response for members of a bowling team to compete one time in early April on a Monday. It looks like we have enough for a couple of teams. I’ll see we can get more than one into the competition. If you are a bowler and would like to join us to have some fun, please let me know. The Steele Winery is sponsoring the event.

As I mentioned last week, there’s a new Vineyard and Winery project underway in Cochise County that’s open for investors…Sam Pillsbury, noted film producer/director, and former co-owner of award-winning Dos Cabezas Wineworks, last year purchased 80 acres of superb vineyard land across the road from his Dos Cabezas holdings. He is raising $1.2 million in investment capital to launch the winery on 40 acres and hold the 40 excess acres for future development or sale. Land values in the immediate area have skyrocketed since Dick Erath from Oregon started his new vineyard next door, but investors will buy in at Sam’s purchase price of $4,375 an acre, substantially lower than the most recent adjacent sale at $7,000 an acre. Page Springs Cellars group has purchased Dos Cabezas vineyards and Eric Glomski of Page Springs will be Sam’s new winemaker. Anyone interested should contact Sam Pillsbury at spillsbury@aol.com for an investment package.
